MODULE CONTENTS
This module explores the concept of sustainable development, which aims to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It traces the history of this notion, from its emergence during the industrial revolution to its formalization at the 1992 Earth Summit, and presents the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted in 2015. The module details the three pillars of sustainable development - environmental, social and economic - and explains how they fit together to ensure a more equitable and sustainable future for all.

Sustainable Development: A Model for a Sustainable Future
Sustainable development is a concept that aims to meet the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This idea took shape with the rise of industrial society in the 19th century, as Western societies began to become aware of the environmental and social impacts of their activities. Several major crises, such as the 1973 oil crisis and the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, reinforced this awareness.
In 1992, at the Earth Summit in Rio, the notion of sustainable development was officially recognized, and its three pillars defined: economically efficient, socially equitable and ecologically sustainable development. In 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to eradicate poverty and promote a more just and sustainable future by 2030.
These goals, which cover a wide range of themes from fighting poverty and hunger to protecting the environment and promoting peace, are interconnected and mutually dependent. They are based on three pillars: the environmental, which advocates the sustainable use of natural resources and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions; the social, which defends equal opportunities, workers' rights and diversity; and the economic, which seeks to promote fair and transparent development, support local players and guarantee customer satisfaction.
The concept of sustainable development continues to evolve, moving closer to the idea of resilience, i.e. the ability to overcome major crises while maintaining social, environmental and economic balance.
